My friend Allen has been tinkering with the GPS receiver on his Nextel cell phone. These phones have a Java Virtual Machine, and you can write your own software to do stuff like report the location of the phone.
So Allen gave me a phone to carry with me. You can get a map of where the phone was last on right here.
You can get a list of every recorded location, with speed and heading right here.
You can also go to ulocate.com, and enter the user "bike" and the password "usa".
It will be very cool to see if this works. I will do my best to keep the phone charged and to remember to turn it on. I am dubious of how much coverage Nextel has in the boondocks, but we will soon see.
