2004 C and O Towpath Ride - Day 4 - Little Orleans to Rocky Gap State Park

The final leg of the trip is about 45 miles on the towpath to the end in Cumberland, and then a big climb up to Rocky Gap State Park.

This is the eastern end of the Paw Paw Tunnel. The canal goes through a tunnel for 3/4 of a mile. The tunnel took years to build. It cost hundreds of Irish laborers to build. It bankrupt the canal company. It's pitch black inside and water drips on your head.

The tunnel is across the river from Paw Paw, West Virginia. A Paw Paw is a fruit. They grow on paw paw trees. They are related to papayas. You can't buy paw paws in the grocery store because they have a shelf life of about a day.

My nephews. They are mad that I took so long to get there because they want to go fishing.
